Marathon runner visits Isaac Newton Primary

Ben Smith

Isaac Newton School had a special visitor in school in November and some pupils ran part of a marathon with him.

Ben Smith, 34, has been attempting to run 401 marathons in 401 days and has finally achieved his target, raising £250,000 in the process.

Ben came to share his experiences with Isaac Newton pupils. His motivation for running 10,506.2 miles was to raise awareness of bullying and he spoke to the children about both the challenges of running and the ways in which they could help one another should bullying happen to them. Ben Smith2

Ben, "I was bullied for eight years of my life at school. It affected my confidence and self-esteem and that led to me trying to take my own life when I was 18."

An emotional Ben Smith was cheered through the finish line by hundreds of supporters and thanked his parents, partner and team for their support.

He reached his fundraising target of £250,000 for two anti-bullying charities, Kidscape and Stonewall.

He said: "A key objective of The 401 Challenge has been to involve as many people as possible and create opportunities for children, young people and adults to discuss the difficult topics of bullying and sexuality."
